DATA SECURITY AWARENESS TRAINING
DATA SECURITY OVERVIEW

Security Awareness TrainingOur recently relaunched training program, Data Security Overview, is a short module (~4.5 minutes long) that consists of a short video and 4 quiz questions.  This data security training course provides a brief basic introduction to data security.  It is designed to serve as the opening message in a data security awareness campaign.  Using a dramatic scenario involving phishing, the video demonstrates the role that all personnel must play in maintaining the security of sensitive data.

The quiz questions test on and reinforce lessons in the video.  The module can stand alone or can be snapped together with other topic segments.

Learning Objectives

  • Become familiar with the basics of data security
  • Understand the hacker technique of phishing
  • Learn the role that employees must play in maintaining the security of sensitive data

There is an epidemic of data breaches these days, and the damage and costs from breaches continue to rise.

Most data breaches are readily preventable. After reviewing more than 1,000 data breaches, one study found that more than 90% of them could have been avoided.

According to a survey, “42% of respondents said security education and awareness for new employees played a role in deterring potential attacks.“  In another poll, 77% of IT professionals said that the workforce was weakest link in data security.

Workforce awareness thus plays a crucial role in preventing breaches.  Workforce awareness also helps to detect breaches early on, which is key to mitigating the harm. According to a study, it takes an average of 229 days to discover a hacking attack. A New York Times article aptly stated:

A bleak recap: In the last two years, breaches have hit the White House, the State Department, the top federal intelligence agency, the largest American bank, the top hospital operator, energy companies, retailers and even the Postal Service. In nearly every case, by the time the victims noticed that hackers were inside their systems, their most sensitive government secrets, trade secrets and customer data had already left the building.

Our Data Security Overview training program can help.  The more aware and vigilant the workforce, the fewer individuals who might do something careless and the more individuals who might detect a breach early on.

About TeachPrivacy and Our Training Philosophy

Daniel Solove Privacy Awareness Training TeachPrivacy was founded by Professor Daniel J. Solove, the leading expert on privacy and data security law. He is deeply involved in the creation of all training programs because he believes that training works best when made by subject-matter experts and by people with extensive teaching experience.

According to Professor Solove: “Great training isn’t about slickness or tricks. It is about teaching. The goal is to make people understand, care, and remember. Great training is made with genuine passion – to make people love training, it must be made with love. Excellent substance is essential. The material must be explained clearly, understandably, and concretely. The content must be short and to the point – and it must be engaging. Slickness and gimmicks can’t compensate for lackluster substance.”

TeachPrivacy provides privacy awareness training, information security awareness training, phishing training, HIPAA training, FERPA training, PCI training, as well as training on many other privacy and security topics.

Professor Solove is a law professor at George Washington University Law School.
